The Print by Ansel Adams
I checked to see which book, The Negative or The Print were more worn out from use. I couldn't tell. The print helps you understand photographic paper and developers. And how to make a fine print with the simple controls of burning and dodging with or with out the use of two developers.
Great examples.Purchase

Examples - The Making of 40 Photographs by Ansel Adams
Mr Adams shows by example. He shows a full page image, then he fully discusses how he shot the scene to get the end print. Ansel talks about his zone placements and why he did a N+ or N- development of the negative and why he used one or two developers to get the image on paper.

Ways of Seeing by John Berger
My copy dates back to 1975 when a photography instructor Honns, told me to purchase a copy. Sometimes a strange simple book. From the cover:
Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak. But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that the world with words, but words can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it. The relation between what we see and what we know it never settled.
